Urban architecture

On the holiday Monday we drove around some of the peninsula where St Petersburg is situated. South to Pinellas Point. West to Gulfport. Then across a bridge to the chain of barrier island communities that extends from the entrance of Tampa Bay up to near Tarpon Springs. We drove only through Treasure Island and Madeira Beach and then crossed back to the mainland.

Where we are in downtown St Petersburg is the closest to urban culture we’ve found. Near the coasts are pockets of gated communities and eccentric quaintness. The Gulf Coast barrier islands are unquestionably all about tourists and seasonal residents. In between is a vast expanse of Florida suburb ranging from vaguely unappealing to down right horrid.
